Ghana ended the year 2014 with 30,360,771 mobile voice subscriber base and an overall teledensity 113.37%, the telecoms regulator has announced about an intensely competitive year for telecoms operators in the West African nation.
On the other hand, mobile data figures in Ghana closed at 15,805,925 subscribers representing a penetration rate of 59.02%, within the same period, obtained by Technology Times from the website of the telecoms watchdog.

National Communications Authority (NCA), the telecoms industry regulator for Ghana reports that mobile voice subscriber base grew by 0.47% and ended the year from 30,219,162 in November 2014 to 30,360,771 and the penetration rate stood at 113.37%.
According to the regulator, MTN’s subscriber base increased marginally from 13,666,766 during the previous month to 13,852,398 during the period under review representing a 1.35% increase.  Their market share also increased to 45.63% from 45.23% in November.
Similarly, Tigo’s subscriber base increased to 4,133,760 from 4,100,172 representing an increase of 0.81%.  For the same period, Tigo’s market share increased likewise from 13.57% in November to 13.62%.
With their market share increasing from 4.76% in November to 4.78%, Glo’s subscriber base also recorded a figure of 1,450,382 from 1,437,400, a decrease of 0.9%.
Vodafone’s subscriber base decreased from 7,137,501 during the previous month to 7,069,516 during the period under review indicating a 0.95% loss.  Their market share also decreased to 23.29% from 23.62% in the previous month.
In the same line, Airtel’s subscriber base also decreased to 3,735,656 from 3,756,656 representing a decrease of 0.55%. Airtel’s market share decreased from 12.43% in November to 12.30% marginally.
Expresso ended the year with a subscriber base of 119,059, down from the previous month’s figure of 120,667. This represented a market share of 0.39% for the CDMA network.
On the data side, Ghana’s telecoms regulator says mobile data figures in the country recorded an increase from 15,710,652 subscribers in November 2014 to 15,805,925 at the end of December, 2014 representing a penetration rate of 59.02%.
MTN, with the highest mobile data market share, posted an increase of 0.04% subscribers to end the year with 8,004,721 from 8,001,126 the previous month. MTN also ended the year with a market share of 50.64%.
Also recording an increase was Vodafone, whose 3.71% increase in subscriptions (representing 106,541 subscribers) translated into mobile data subscriber base of 2,868,249 from November’s figure of 2,761,708. Vodafone’s market share increased to 18.15% from 17.58% in November.
Airtel also increased its data subscriber base by 7,290, which represents an increase of 0.34%; ending the month of December with a figure of 2,130,033 from 2,122,743. The company’s share of the mobile data market dipped slightly from 13.51% in November, 2014 to 13.48%.
Tigo, for December, 2014, experienced a decrease in subscription figure by 0.70% and ended the month with 2,097,167 subscribers from November’s figures of 2,111,925 subscribers. For the month under review Tigo’s market share was 13.27%.
Glo’s subscription also decreased by 0.63% which represents 4,256 subscribers, and resulted in a decreased market share of 4.23%, Glo’s subscriber base decreased from 672,680 subscribers in November to 668,424 subscribers in December 2014.
Finally, Expresso, which recorded an upward swing the previous month, indicated a loss of 8.40% with 37,331 subscribers from November’s figure of 40,470 subscribers. Expresso’s market share for the month ending the year was 0.24%.
