Airtel Nigeria, the number two mobile operator in the country by subscriber base has tied up with Wikipedia to enable its mobile phone consumers use the online information repository free of data charges.

[sh_poll poll_id=”4308695″ template_id=”1″]The alliance hopes to connect 9.65 million Airtel data user with billions of Internet user across the globe whose access to the Internet is primarily through a mobile device, the mobile phone company said.

Airtel Nigeria subscribers can use Wikipedia free of data charges at m.wikipedia.org said Maurice Newa, Chief Commercial Officer, Airtel Nigeria.

“We are excited with our partnership with the Wikipedia Foundation and we will continue to provide innovative solutions that will uplift Nigerians in line with our brand promise of becoming the most loved brand in the daily lives of Nigerians”, Newa said.

Airtel Nigeria recently moved up to the second place in terms of market share on the number of mobile subscribers on its network as its subscriber base hit 26.20 million at the end February 2014, representing 21 per cent of the telecoms market share in the country.
