Bayobab Group, the digital solutions provider formerly known as MTN GlobalConnect, has announced the successful restoration of its operations following disruptions caused by multiple undersea cable cuts on March 14, 2024.
These cable cuts, impacting vital infrastructure along Africa’s West Coast, affected internet and communication services for several countries, including Nigeria. As a major player in the region, Bayobab, a subsidiary of MTN Group, took swift action to minimize downtime for its customers, the company said.
On March 14, four critical undersea cables – WACS, ACE, SAT3, and MainOne – were damaged, disrupting internet connectivity across West Africa. These cables are essential for transmitting data traffic between Africa, Europe, and the Americas. The outage impacted mobile network operators (MNOs) like MTN Nigeria, hindering internet access and communication services for millions.

Bayobab acknowledged the disruptions and prioritized service restoration. In an earlier statement released on March 15, 2024, Bayobab Group acknowledged the challenges caused by disruptions to undersea cables along West Africa’s coast. They confirmed damage to four major cables and outlined their response strategy. This strategy focused on rerouting traffic through their existing network infrastructure while collaborating with partners to expedite repairs and enhance future network resilience.

Their statement read, “As of 19 March 2024, Bayobab Group, a subsidiary of MTN Group, has successfully restored its operations, recovering over 3 Terabits per second (Tbps) of capacity across our footprint.”
“Although the recent subsea cable disruptions on 14 March 2024 presented challenges, we have demonstrated our capabilities to maintain a resilient network and efficiently reroute traffic.”
“Throughout this challenging period, we prioritised the restoration of services by swiftly activating new cables to increase inter-connectivity and establish alternative routes, thereby bolstering our network resilience.”
According to the company, “this approach solidifies our commitment to prioritising network reliability, and our dedication to connecting Africa and our customers as quickly as possible marking the final stretch toward connecting all our valued customers. Bayobab’s ecosystem facilitates secure and scalable global traffic within Africa and the rest of the world serving 19 MTN markets, third-party Mobile Network Operators, Technology corporations and other Telecoms Service Providers.”
