Dr Abdulwahab Lawan, Dean Faculty at Computer Science and Technology, Bayero University, wants the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to ensure Internet service providers to improve service delivery to consumers.

Dr Lawan made the call at the second part of the stakeholders meeting on ‘Speedy and Affordable Internet Service in Nigeria’ organised by Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), a non-governmental organization to offer solutions to epileptic Internet service.
The telecoms regulatory watchdog, NCC, must ensure that service providers operate within the range of acceptable limited quality of service agreement to enhance effective service delivery, the university don says.
According to him, the call was necessary because Internet service was a very important tool for socio-economic development, while also noting that “the service provided by the operators has a lot of challenges, hence the need for the regulatory agencies to rise up to the challenges to correct the anomaly.”
Lawan told attendees at the CITAD forum that “if education is a right, the access to Internet service should also be a right” and that Internet service should not be a privilege in view of its importance toward promoting socio-economic development.
According to him, NGOs like CITAD also have a significant role to play in advocacy to ensure that Internet service speed was improved, its cost reduced and the level of affordability enhanced.
