The Federal Government has said that the phone code ‘112’ has been designated Nigeria’s emergency phone line for the public to call in times of distress.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the nation’s telecoms regulator which has launched the emergency line to the public said it will also be accessible from all mobile phones by simply dialling 112.
Although several Nigerian states have their respective emergency services, this is the first national emergency of its kind in Nigeria, NCC said.
The line is toll free and members of the public are free to call in times of emergency.
Meanwhile, the regulator urged members of the public to use the service only in times of emergency and desist from making prank calls, calling when there is no emergency or giving misleading information.
