US-based Starlink, a satellite internet service provided by SpaceX that aims to provide high-speed internet access to remote and underserved areas has announced plans to make inroads into the Nigerian market after securing licences from the telecoms regulator. Nigeria recorded over 222.6 million active phones with the majority accounting for over 99.8% of the active lines connected to mobile phones compared to fixed lines, while the internet connections surpassed 156 million at the end of 2022. Nigeria’s mobile millions are now connected to 222,571,568 lines representing some 116.60% penetration nationwide, with internet connection on regular speed and higher speed broadband connection representing 154,847,901 and 90,398,960 (47.36%) respectively, according to the telecoms industry statistics by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The IXPN, a facility set up to route local internet traffic with Nigeria, now has Starlink listed among new members of its ecosystem counting the leading mobile network operators in the country like MTN Nigeria, the local unit of South Africa’s MTN Group; Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, NATCOM (Ntel), and has started exchanging local traffic through the peering point of data centre company, MDX-I, the data centre owned by MainOne, owners of of the submarine cable that goes by the same name.
