Dr. Omobola Johnson, Minister of Communication Technology, has asked State Governments to reduce multiple tax in Nigeria and levies on ICT infrastructure.
The CommTech Minister underscored Nigeria’s National Economic Council’s decisions to cut multiple tax and levies on ICT infrastructure in their various domains.
The CommTech Minister “strongly believes that the elimination of multiple taxes will result in cost-effective, accelerated and massive deployment of ICT infrastructure across the country, which will enhance quality delivery issues currently being experienced by telecoms subscribers.”
Johnson made this remark while delivering a keynote address at the 3rd regular meeting of the National Council on Communication Technology (NCCT) held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa.
She noted that the 3rd NCCT Council meeting coming at a very promising time for the ICT industry, with the recent rebasing of Nigeria’s economy, which placed the contribution of the sector to the country’s GDP at 10.44 percent as at 2013.
As the highest policy advisory forum of the ICT Sector the Minister urged the NCCT to forge integrated and co-ordinated development of the sector to not only sustain but to surpass these impressive statistics.
ICT deployment also has the potentials of creating thousands of low to high-skilled ICT jobs for young entrepreneurs as the infrastructure is rolled out and then maintained, the Minister said.
