Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has mandated the newly-established Ministry of Science and Technology to develop science and technical education in the state.
Governor Otu has also approved the relocation of the Science and Technical Education Board, along with all its schools, from the Cross River State Ministry of Education to the Ministry of Science and Technology.
The Ministry of Science and Technology says in a statement that the decision is aimed at improving science and technical education in the state, and it is guided by the need to reposition science and technical education in the state for the purpose it was established for.
“The Governor noted that the reason for situating the schools in the first instance in the Ministry of Education was because of a lack of a specialized ministry to drive science and technical education. Therefore, he deemed it fit to so create the Ministry of Science and Technology and gave it a mandate to develop science and technical education. And this new approval is consequent upon that,” the statement says.
Governor Otu hopes this move will lead to the development of new policies and initiatives that will improve science and technical education in the state.
Dr. Justin Beshel, Commissioner for Science and Technology, praised the Governor’s decision and promised to work towards achieving the goals of the initiative.
“I want to specifically thank His Excellency, Governor Bassey Otu, for this initiative. We welcome this development with great excitement and will work hard to ensure that the Governor’s objective for the decision is achieved,” Dr. Beshel states.
This move places the Ministry of Science and Technology in charge of supervising science and technical schools and the board, to ensure that they are better aligned with their purpose, according to the government.
