The Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization (CTO) says it is providing technical assistance on broadband connectivity to member countries including Nigeria.
Nigeria is a member of CTO, the influential Commonwealth telecoms group which says that at least five countries would be provided with technical assistance every year including best practices recommendations.
This is one of the extract from the CTO strategic plan for 2016-2020 which aims to assist members in developing and using ICTs for socio-economic benefits.
According to the strategic plan endorsed by the Commonwealth ICT Ministers, ”CTO will organize suitable broadband meetings and workshops to develop strategies for broadband development and use for CTO members at various levels i.e. ministers, regulators, operators and other stakeholders.”
In order to achieve this goal, CTO plans to foster an atmosphere of cooperation between governments, private sector companies and regulators with a view to increasing broadband penetration.

Also, CTO proposes to promote the culture of Cyber-security and effective Cyber-governance among member states hence collaborating with global partners involved in Cyber-security, and mobilize funding and support for Cyber-security activities.
CTO will also develop database of cyber-security resources in member countries, organize capacity building fora on Cyber-security, and assist members in developing response mechanisms to cyber-threats, according to the body.
With the expiry of the previous Strategic Plan in 2016, CTO says it will embark on the development of a new Strategic Plan which would transform the organization and created added value for its members.
Other plans among the external goals in the strategic plan for 2016-2020 include; Enhance the Value of CTO Membership and Expand CTO Membership Base; Promote Enabling Regulatory Environments; Promote the Development and Use of ICT Applications for Socio-economic Development; and Ensure Effective Coordination of Commonwealth Countries at International ICT Conferences and Meetings
For a successful implementation of the Strategic Plan, CTO also plans to undertake monitoring and evaluation (M&E) exercises, which according to it, will take place at least every year.
