Kaspersky, a leading global cybersecurity firm, is reminding users about the importance of regularly cleaning their mobile devices and computers.

These digital devices store increasingly sensitive data, ranging from personal information to work-related content. While users focus on functionality, Kaspersky highlights that “regular cleaning is therefore necessary.”

“Doing so not only boosts their performance but will also improve their security – which is critical for your digital life,” the cybersecurity firm says.

Devices that are not well-maintained can become a target of cyberattacks since hackers can take advantage of the weak points brought about by outdated software or unused applications.

It is not that difficult to give your device a good and regular clean to improve security, which is important at a time when hackers are targeting all types of devices, including mobiles.”

David Emm, Principal Security Researcher at Kaspersky.

How to keep devices clean: The actionable steps

David Emm, Principal Security Researcher at Kaspersky, explains that “a well-maintained device not only operates better, but also reduces the risk of cyber threats. It also helps you to keep track of things and ensures that nothing is overlooked that could help a cyber attacker gain access to your device and the data it holds. It is not that difficult to give your device a good and regular clean to improve security, which is important at a time when hackers are targeting all types of devices, including mobiles.”

Kaspersky suggests several actionable steps to enhance device security. For instance, users are encouraged to uninstall apps they no longer use. These unused applications may seem harmless but can become potential gateways for hackers if left outdated.

Additionally, users need to update their device software regularly. Many cyberattacks exploit vulnerabilities in older software versions, so enabling automatic updates is a simple yet effective way to protect devices.

Other recommended steps include organising and decluttering the desktop and home screens in order to enhance productivity and reduce the risk of overlooking critical files or security issues. Device users should arrange files into folders and remove unnecessary items, and also clear browser caches and cookies to improve browsing speed and ensure better privacy protection.

For most users, battery life is a major concern, especially mobile devices. Users can optimize battery consumption by turning off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when not in use, and limiting background data for apps. Simple adjustments, such as disabling automatic syncing for social media apps, can significantly extend battery life while making the device work more efficiently, Kaspersky suggests.

Security, of course, extends beyond digital cleaning. Kaspersky experts recommend reviewing passwords regularly, ensuring they are unique and difficult to guess. This prevents unauthorised access to sensitive accounts. “Also consider using a password manager for the creation of stronger, unique passwords, and for their secure storage across devices and auto filling on any website or app. The benefit is that you do not have to remember all of them – just the main password,” the cybersecurity firm says.

Physical cleaning should not be overlooked either. Dust and grime can accumulate on keyboards, screens, and ports, which may affect performance. Regular physical cleaning helps maintain the overall functionality of devices. Alongside cleaning, Kaspersky encourages installing reliable security software to detect potential threats. “To streamline all these digital cleanup processes, install and maintain reputable antivirus and anti-malware software on your devices. Regularly scan your devices for potential threats and keep your security software up to date,” says Kaspersky.

“By dedicating some time to regularly cleaning and maintaining your digital devices, you will improve their efficiency while also keeping your personal data safeguarded from potential cyber threats,” Emm says.
