The National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has hinted at a plan to develop a National Certification Programme to promote data protection capacity across Nigeria.
The nation’s data protection agency hinted this after announcing a collaboration with the Institute of Information Management (IIM) to promote data protection certifications.
By leveraging insights and expertise from key stakeholders, the NDPC said it hopes to develop a National Certification Programme that not only meets rigorous standards but also addresses the dynamic challenges posed by emerging technologies and evolving data landscapes. This initiative aligns with the Commission’s broader vision of ensuring data sovereignty, enhancing consumer trust, and fostering innovation in a data-driven economy, according to NDPC.
NDPC announced what it considers a significant partnership with IIM led by Dr Oyedokun Oyewole through its official X channel noting that it signals a concerted effort to enhance data governance practices and empower organisations with the necessary tools to navigate evolving data privacy challenges.
Amidst growing concerns about data protection and privacy in Nigeria, NDPC has taken steps to fortify the country’s data governance framework and has emerged as a pivotal regulatory body entrusted with safeguarding individuals’ data rights and promoting responsible data management practices across various sectors.
Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner and CEO of NDPC said that the Commission has consistently advocated for strong data protection mechanisms aligned with global standards.
Recognising the need for a comprehensive National Certification Program for Data Protection and Privacy, Olatunji said that the NDPC has embarked on a strategic collaboration with key stakeholders to ensure the efficacy and credibility of such initiatives.
The collaborative session, spanning two days, was attended by the NDPC CEO and some staff members, alongside Oyewole and the IM management team. The primary agenda revolved around a meticulous review of the proposed training guide integral to the National Certification process.
