Digital Bridge Institute in Lagos to be ready by October 2013, NCC says

Lagos. October 22, 2012: The Digital Bridge Institute, Lagos a proposed ICT training that will also be home to a Technology Park will be ready to start taking on its first batch of trainees by October next year, the nation’s telecoms umpire has said.

BDI Lagos envisioned to be a world-class ICT training institution being built on the old NITEL Training School in Oshodi area of Lagos by the Abuja-based Digital Bridge Institute, the training arm of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will cost N51 billion, the regulator says.

The completion date was disclosed during a recent tour of NCC’s projects including DBI Lagos and Emergency Communications Center, Awka by the Federal House Committee on Communications part of its oversight functions to ascertain the level of implementation of the 2012 Budget.

According to NCC, the Lagos Campus of DBI is expected to be ready for the first batch of trainees by October, 2013 and is aimed at bridging the ICT gap in Nigeria so as to improve employment opportunities, increase efficiency and innovation, among other things.

The project site is the former NITEL Training center which was acquired by the NCC and will focus on professional certification at the lower to mid-levels training.

The training and academic emphasis on this campus is on building a variety of lower to mid – level professional skills in ICT, DBI Abuja says.

When completed the campus will include a large auditorium for 300 – 500 persons, two large and one small hall, seven large buildings each with several classrooms and offices, female and male residential buildings, a Guest House for 20 persons, workshop buildings and recreational areas including a soccer field.

Under the plan, the proposed hub of the National Software Incubation Center (NSIC) will be located in the Lagos Campus justified on the basis that the software industry from which the NSIC will derive its clientele is concentrated in Lagos, DBI adds.

Apart from the proposed DBI Technology Park in Lagos, which is designed to promote innovation and discovery of appropriate information and communication technology in Nigeria and Africa, “DBI will take the lead in bringing technology, business and government together and thus propel technology adoption.”

According to the training institution, “the technology park is a dynamic ICT and business community, specifically designed to help emerging ICT businesses flourish. The facilities, services and DBI personnel experience in business incubation can help meet the needs of growing Nigerian and international tech – based companies that will be housed at the DBI Technology Park.”
