Dr. Karl Olutokun Toriola, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, has been awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in Engineering, Honoris Causa, from his alma mater, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

This honour was conferred during the university’s 48th convocation ceremony, which took place from December 12 to 14, 2024, celebrating his contributions to the telecommunications industry and his deep ties to his alma mater.
“Born in Ile-Ife, had my primary, secondary, and university education on campus and met some of my most reliable friends and confidants on campus. I can proudly say that Obafemi Awolowo University shaped me in a significant way, Toriola says, while writing about the conferment of the honorary degree on social media service, LinkedIn.
According to the MTN Nigeria CEO, “It’s truly humbling to have been awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Science. I’m grateful to the Governing Council and management of the school.”
MTN Nigeria, where Toriola leads the team at the nation’s largest mobile network operator, also celebrates the honour.

Born on March 16, 1972, in Ile-Ife, Toriola’s early life and education were closely linked to OAU. He completed his primary, secondary, and university education on the campus, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering. He later pursued a Master of Science degree in Communication Systems at the University of Wales, Swansea, in the United Kingdom.

Toriola’s career spans over two decades in the telecommunications sector. He began at Ericsson Nigeria in 2000 as Support and Integration Manager, then moved to Vmobile (now Airtel) and Econet Nigeria in technical roles. In 2006, he joined MTN and has held various senior operational roles across the Group, including CEO of MTN Cameroon and CTO of MTN Nigeria.
His leadership extended across MTN’s operations in Africa, serving as CEO of MTN Congo Brazzaville and MTN Cameroon, and later as Vice President for the West and Central Africa (WECA) region. In October 2020, he was appointed CEO of MTN Nigeria, leading the company during a critical period of growth and digital transformation.
In addition to his corporate achievements, Toriola is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and a member of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria. He also serves on the Governing Council of Lagos State University, contributing to the development of education in Nigeria.

He was recognised alongside other honourees, including Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Dr. Akinade Akanmu Ogunbiyi, Group Chairman of Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc, Dr. Daere Afonya-Akobo, Chairman of PANA Holdings and the Group Managing Director of PE Energy Ltd, DK-LoK Nigeria Limited, and Kari Care Technology Ltd, and Professor Anthony Adegbulugbe, an academic and entrepreneur.
