The Enugu State Government has unveiled plans to transform its transportation system by introducing 200 hybrid buses that run on diesel and compressed natural gas (CNG).
Governor Peter Mbah announced this during an X Space session, where he engaged with residents and addressed their concerns.
Governor Mbah says that these buses, expected to arrive by January 2025, will address long-standing transportation challenges. “A lot of these buses are imported, and some are assembled here in Nigeria. They are meant to be here by December; however, by the end of January, they will be here,” the Governor says. The state will also launch an app to facilitate ticket purchases, making travel seamless for residents.

As part of efforts to attract investors, Governor Mbah emphasises that his government is consdering the use of advanced technology to tackle insecurity. Under the plan, a specialized security system would be launched to ensure comprehensive surveillance across the state. “We have invested hugely in a Closed-Circuit TV (CCTV) system embedded with AI to help track criminals, identify them, and bring them to justice,” he says.

The governor also highlighted well-paved roads, clean streets, and exposing children to skills that would make them relevant in the workplace as factors that would draw investors to Enugu.
During the question-and-answer session, residents posed several pressing questions to the governor.
An Enugu resident, Akwuete, asked about the timeline for the construction of the 260 Smart Schools, noting that only one has been built since Governor Mbah assumed office a year ago.
In response, the governor stated that the Smart Schools were estimated to be fully completed by September 2025, with all construction happening simultaneously. “As of February or March next year, they will be completed in terms of infrastructure. However, to fully equip them, they are expected to be finished by September 2025,” Governor Mbah explains.
Another resident, Ugochukwu Aronu, inquired about the tech startup bill and the need to create real value for startups. He highlighted the importance of establishing research labs and bringing together great minds to create innovations with global impact.
Governor Mbah acknowledged that technology is the future and stressed the need for essentials such as high-speed internet, widespread internet access, and 24-hour electricity supply. He assures Aronu of plans to invest heavily in digital spaces within the state and universities. The governor also expressed his vision of transforming classrooms into creativity hubs and spaces for experimental learning to maximize the potential of youths.
Governor Mbah urged residents of Enugu State to replicate the kind of development and laudable projects they see and utilise when they travel overseas.
