The Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development has started biometric data capture of individuals exposed to explosives in the mining industry in Nigeria.

This Biometric Data Capturing Project, which marks a significant step towards modernising the sector, leverages advanced biometric technology to improve accountability and compliance with national regulations, according to the Ministry.

The mining industry in Nigeria has long faced challenges related to safety, security, and regulatory compliance. With a wealth of mineral resources, the sector is crucial for economic development but is often plagued by issues such as identity fraud and inadequate tracking of personnel handling hazardous materials.

The project, the Ministry adds, will help ensure adherence to Nigerian regulations and industry best practices, thereby fostering a safer working environment and by accurately tracking personnel involved in explosive handling, the initiative aims to mitigate risks associated with unauthorised access and potential security breaches.

Ministry: Biometric data capture to reduce identity theft among people exposed to explosives

The new biometric data capturing project, according to the Ministry, seeks to address these challenges by implementing a tech-based management platform developed by Aribet International Limited.

Dr. Mary Ogbe, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, highlights the importance of this project during its launch. The initiative aims to create a secure framework for tracking individuals and equipment involved in explosive-related activities within the mining sector. By utilising biometric data, including fingerprints and facial recognition, the Ministry intends to enhance operational efficiency and bolster national security.

The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development says that the project aims to reduce identity theft among individuals exposed to explosives, ensuring that only authorised personnel can access sensitive areas or operate dangerous equipment. By streamlining the process of capturing and storing data related to explosive-exposed persons, the initiative seeks to facilitate better management practices within the mining industry.

The biometric data capturing process will involve collecting personal and organisational information from individuals working in or around explosives. This includes not only basic identification details but also biometric identifiers such as fingerprints and facial images. The collected data will be securely stored in compliance with international best practices and relevant Nigerian data protection laws. The Ministry has encouraged eligible participants to cooperate fully with teams conducting the data-capturing exercise, emphasising that this initiative is crucial for improving safety standards across the industry.

The platform developed by Aribet International Limited is designed to be robust yet flexible enough to cater to the diverse needs of Nigeria’s mining sector. The system ensures that all biometric data is encrypted and stored securely, protecting it from unauthorised access or breaches. The technology allows for real-time monitoring of personnel involved in explosive activities, enhancing accountability. Designed for ease of use, the platform enables quick data entry and retrieval, facilitating efficient operations on-site.

Looking ahead, the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development plans to expand this initiative further. The Ministry may explore integrating biometric systems with other emerging technologies such as IoT devices for enhanced monitoring and reporting capabilities.
