The Federal Government says it has commissioned state-of-the-art laboratories for testing capabilities for bituminous materials in six Federal universities across the geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

Uche Nnaji, Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, said that the commissioning of the Asphalt Testing and Material Characterization Laboratory in the six Federal universities aims to equip the educational institutions to develop a new generation of engineers, researchers and innovators who will provide national solutions to Nigeria’s infrastructural challenges.

The Minister also noted that, alongside the cutting-edge laboratory, state-of-the-art construction testing equipment was handed over to these universities.
“This initiative came about because there was a lack of adequate laboratory equipment for teaching and research in the field of engineering, which has been a major cause of poor performance among students in the universities,” the Minister said.
He explained that this inadequacy led to the ministry’s collaboration with the Nigerian Building & Road Research Insititute (NBRRI) to provide the laboratories and support the ministry’s vision for improved infrastructure, job creation, youth empowerment, and advanced sustainable practices in Nigeria.
“With advanced equipment and laboratories now at their disposal, these universities are positioned to become hubs of technological advancement, fostering discoveries that will drive Nigeria’s progress and ensure resilience in the face of future challenges,” Nnaji said.
He emphasised that the initiative aligned with the Ministry’s commitment, as well as the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, to foster education, research and sustainable development in the country, underscoring their shared belief that innovation is the backbone of sustainable development.
The Minister further explained that the initiative is more than an investment in physical infrastructure. According to him, the laboratories and equipment have been designed to conduct advanced integrity tests that will provide a comprehensive analysis to mitigate the risks of building collapses.
“By adopting the best testing models and standards,” Nnaji added, “these resources will empower our universities to conduct better world-class research that delivers high-quality, reliable data crucial for ensuring construction safety and longevity.”
He said that the project will build partnerships across various ministries, including housing, public works, and urban development, leading to a coordinated and impactful approach to sustainable infrastructure in Nigeria.
The Minister expressed gratitude to the NBRRI for its efforts in managing the project and implored the universities to adequately utilise the equipment to create practical and real-world solutions that will benefit the country.
