The Minster of Communication Technology, Omobola Johnson, has denied a report that the Federal Government has imported 490,000 computers in a drive to boost PC penetration across the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) had earlier reported that the Minister informed a reporter with the newswire service that the Federal Government has acquired 490,000, a number said to represent 70 per cent of the 700,000 computers that the Ministry had so far bought for sale to interested Nigerians at subsidised rate.
Meanwhile, the Minister has refuted the claim citing that, “the news report is false and a fabrication of the reporter.”
Special Assistant, Media to the Minister of Communication Technology, Efem Nkanga, said in a statement that, “at no time did the Minister speak with any reporter on such an issue.”
According to her, one of the Ministry’s primary goals is to create an enabling environment that will ensure that local content in the sector is developed for the benefit of Nigerians.
“To ensure local value added in the sector, the Ministry is in the process of finalising local content guidelines and policy interventions that will create a level playing field for local OEMs and stimulate demand for the products of indigenous manufacturers”, according to the Ministry.
