The Federal Institute of Industrial Research (FIIRO) says it is ready to sell series of made-in-Nigeria technology equipment designed for food processing in the country.
Dr. Dele Oyeku, the Director of Extension and Linkage, FIIRO, who unveiled these technologies at the Small and Medium Enterprise Group (SMEG) Annual Symposium says the innovations will use technology to promote agriculture in the country.
According to the FIIRO Director, “the Institute has developed over 250 technologies since inception, but 50 of them have been completely packaged ready for commercialization and investment at micro, small and medium scales.”
Oyeku who was represented by Mr. Ogundeji Razaque Kayode, Deputy Director, Techno Entrepreneurship at FIIRO says that there are “techno-investment opportunities and services available at FIIRO for the micro, small and medium entrepreneurs.”
As part of its original mandate, FIIRO is saddled with the responsibility to develop indigenous processing techniques into the use of modern technology in the area of food, agro-allied products and in various non food uses, Oyeku says.
According to him, FIIRO is mandated to identify and develop appropriate technologies and assist in their transfer and adaptation of utilization by local enterprises.
According to FIIRO, the the Made-in-Nigeria machines (undelisted) were devloped by the research agency for food processing in the country:
This can be used to extract starch out from cassava roots. After peeling the cassava using the cassava peeler, the cassava is then grated with grating machine, and the starch extractor helps to separate the starch from the grated cassava.
Garri is a fermented cassava flakes product, which is a common food in almost every part of Nigeria. It is a product of the grated cassava. The Garri Fryer is used to fry the cassava flakes (garri) to be ready for use.
YAM SLICER AND YAM PARBOILER
These two machines are used for slicing yam tubers and parboiling. The Yam Slicer slices the yam, while the Parboiler parboils it. Parboiled yam is used to make Pounded Yam, a popular food in Nigeria.
This machine is used to de-hull Cowpea to remove the outer coverings. This is done in the process of making Cowpea flour – flour produced from cowpea which can be reconstituted to produce traditional favorites like “akara” and “moi-moi”. The Dehuller separates the shaft from the cotyledon by a stream of air.
This device is used in extracting fresh juice from Pineapple fruits. The juice is sweetened and preserved with preservatives, and can be packaged for sale.
There are also other juice extractors as this:
Juice Filling Machine
Other machines include:
The Rectifier is used for electroplating. Electroplating is a process that uses electric current to reduce dissolved metal cations so that they form a coherent metal coating on an electrode. There is high demand for electroplated products in homes, offices, hospitals and industries. Items for plating include jewelries, furniture, spare parts, electrical appliances, bolt and nut, engine parts, shoe and belt buckles, military officers rank decorations, and so on.
This machine is a device that treats food products to kill disease-causing organisms.
Motorized Plantain Slicer
This machine is used to slice Plantain when making Plantain chips. Plantain chips are spherical or elongated shaped deep-fried product, obtained from a wholesome unripe (green) matured plantain fingers.
Hammer Mill (wet)
The Hammaer Mill (wet) is used for grinding wet grains which can be used to make kunu, or pap, a local drink in Nigeria.
Hammer Mill (dry)
The Hammaer Mill (dry) is used for grinding dry grains used to make Tuwo, a popular food in Nigeria.
Powder fufu is a white fermented carbohydrate food produced from cassava roots. It is a local food consumed in many parts of Nigeria. The cassava fermented using a Fermentor machine, and later pulped with the Fufu Pulper to remove fibre.
Cosmetics Production Line
This machine is used during the process of making body cosmetics, like body lotion. The machine is used during the series of stages in the production, which include the mixing of ingredients and filling the containers.
Edible Cashew Kernel is a snack product rich in energy Carbohydrate (22%), protein (21%) and non-cholesterol fat (47%). This machine is used to roast the Cashew nut, which will enable an easy way to get the kernel out.
Cashew Nut Cracker
The kernel is shelled in the nuts. The roasted Cashew nuts are cracked using the Cracker to separate the kernel and shell.
The kernels are cooled and dried using the Cabinet Dryer.
Beniseed Oil Expeller
This machine is used to extract oil from vegetables such as Groundnut, Beniseed, Melon. The seeds are loaded into an oil expeller for oil extraction.
Adhesives are substances that are capable of holding materials together either by chemical or mechanical attraction. Adhesives may be referred to as glues or pastes, which are available either as ready-for use liquids or as dry powders or gums. This machine is used to break down the intermolecular bonds of starch molecules in cassava-based adhesive in the presence of water and heat.
FIIRO says the estimated cost of machinery and equipment depends on the capacity of the equipment which could vary according to the task capacity per day.
