First Bank today told Technology Times that plans are underway by the frontline Nigerian bank to allow customers open their account online without having to visit any of its branches nationwide.
Except when it comes to upgrading the account, the customers can activate the entire account opening process, Mr Olayinka Ijabiyi, Head, Brand Strategy and Digital Marketing at First Bank told technology Times at the sidelines of Social Media Week Lagos saying that although this system of account opening has been in operation by some other banks, First Bank will add innovation.
“It’s not that we are coming into it this late. There are certain things we are looking at anyway, whether others have had it before or in whatever forms others have it”, he says.
According to Ijabiyi, “we will be having an online account opening package soon where you can open an account via Facebook and any of the other social media platform. You can go to our website, very simple, very easy.” “As soon as you open it, you can start transacting with it. That’s the essence of it” he adds.
Although this system of account opening has been in operation by some other banks, First Bank will add a new twist to it.
Speaking on the reason for the delay, Ijabiyi says that, “it’s not that we are coming into it this late. There are certain things we are looking at anyway, whether others have had it before or in whatever forms others have it.”
According to the First Bank executive, “you see to it that you are bringing something that is different. What I will say to you is wait until you see the product, then you will see the difference from what others are doing.”
According to him, social media has been a fast and easy platform where the bank engages customers and non-customers alike on a regular basis with their services, and things people don’t necessarily know about even though they have been advertised.”
The First Bank Digital Media executive says that social media is a viable platform that helps in drawing people’s attention to their services that are on their Facebook and Twitter pages, and by so doing, has helped the bank to gain more customers and has also intensified the customer care system because people can ask questions concerning the services of the bank and receive responses online.
One of the other key new age services also rendered is the First Online App that allows customers automatically download and use in carrying out banking transactions on the go.
Another is the “First Mobile” app, which is the most recently introduced mobile banking platform by the bank where customers can carry out banking transactions through their mobile phones and this is being promoted with the use of social media, and another is the “First Money” app which is a mobile wallet.
