Flutterwave remains committed to the development of African tech talents as the leading African payment technology company drives its global ambitions, according to CEO, Olugbenga Agboola.
The Flutterwave CEO reveals that 88% of the company’s tech hires are African, while writing on X (formerly Twitter).
“88% of our tech hires are African with over 80% in Lagos,” Agboola says. “We have a globally diverse team with representation from all over the world – Flutterwave’s vision is global and our workforce reflects that.“
Beyond hiring, Flutterwave is deeply invested in nurturing and empowering African talent. “We believe in hiring and growing our own tech talent,” Agboola says. The company’s commitment to this is evident in its various initiatives, including partnerships with secondary schools, mentorship programmes for university students, and a Graduate Trainee Programme that has already benefited 200 young Nigerians, according to Flutterwave.
Agboola says he never had any doubts over the potential of Africa: “I don’t believe in putting any limitations on what we can do from within the continent.” He calls that “African ingenuity”—his term for the spirit of innovation and global excellence which is characteristic in the region.
Founded in 2016 by Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, Olugbenga Agboola, and Adeleke Adekoya, Flutterwave has rapidly grown into a pan-African payments giant.
The company’s mission is to simplify payments across Africa and globally. Through its platform, businesses can process payments from various sources, including cards, mobile money, and bank transfers.
Flutterwave’s focus on African talent is further evidenced by its Engineering Mobility Programme in partnership with Capgemini, a global technology consulting firm, in September 2023. The collaboration involves a talent programme where Flutterwave’s Nigeria and UK-based engineering team worked alongside Capgemini’s team in India “to share industry best practices and nurture the next-generation workforce.”
Another example of nurturing young talents is the graduate trainee programme at Flutterwave. This 12-month programme offers recent graduates the opportunity to gain practical experience and develop problem-solving skills. The programme covers various departments including engineering, design, finance, marketing, among others.
