Flutterwave has announced the commercial launch of its flagship remittance product, Send App, in Malawi.
The expansion of Send App in Malawi will facilitate faster, easier, and more affordable cross-border money transfers for Malawians living abroad.
Flutterwave, which accepts payments in over 30 currencies, announced in a statement its Send App now offers customers in Malawi the opportunity to receive money through both mobile apps and web devices. The service, the fintech company says, provides favourable exchange rates, 24/7 in-app assistance, and a dedicated support team.
In October 2023, Flutterwave was granted the International Money Transfer Operators (IMTO) licence by the Reserve Bank of Malawi to ”enable the payments company to process remittances from Malawians and other Africans sending money back home.”
Olugbenga ‘GB’ Agboola, Founder and CEO of Flutterwave says that with the arrival of Send App in Malawi, “and our knowledge of the crucial role remittances play in supporting the personal needs of individuals in Malawi, we are better positioned to support Malawians who want to receive money from the diaspora.”
The debut of the service, according to Agboola, also “marks the beginning of an exciting journey of endless possibilities in Malawi, and we’ll continue innovating to make Send App available to as many people as possible who need it across the African continent.”
Lumbani Gondwe, Country Manager for Malawi, further explains that “Send App was built to connect families, friends, and loved ones seamlessly no matter the distance. Malawi, the heart of Africa, is a great country that thrives on such connections. With complete bank coverage and other integrations such as expanding our delivery options to include Mobile Money and Cash Pickup being actively worked, we are ready to facilitate affordable, quick, secure, and seamless international money transfers for Malawians home and abroad.”
Send App, originally known as $end, was first launched in 2021 and relaunched in 2023 with expanded capabilities, enabling transfers from key regions like the US and Canada.
Flutterwave says that Send App has strengthened the bonds between Africans in the diaspora and their loved ones at home.
