The Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (FMIST) has set up a 14-member Planning Committee to drive a strategic workshop aimed at accelerating innovation-led solutions that translate research outputs into practical, home-grown technologies for economic and value creation.

The committee, tasked with reviewing Presidential priorities and laying the groundwork for a high-level workshop designed to strengthen innovation-driven solutions that convert research into commercially viable technologies aligned with Nigeria’s development needs.

Inaugurating the committee, Philip Ediomu, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, says the move is part of ongoing efforts to implement Presidential priorities and deliver on the Ministry’s mandates under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to Ediomu, the planned workshop is providing a structured platform for stakeholders across the innovation ecosystem to critically assess national priorities in line with the Ministry’s innovation and technology mandate.

“The workshop,” Ediomu says, “is designed to provide a structured platform for stakeholders to critically review Presidential priorities and Ministerial deliverables in tandem with the Ministry’s mandate of driving innovative solutions that translate research into practical, home-grown technologies for economic and value creation.”

He further discloses that the Ministry is working in collaboration with the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office–Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (FCDO-PACE) to ensure the programme delivers measurable and sustainable outcomes.

He notes that the partnership is expected to support the development of a robust and results-driven programme that will make the workshop practical, impactful and aligned with Nigeria’s economic diversification objectives.

“The partnership will help to develop a robust programme and ensure that the workshop is practical, impactful and result-oriented, contributing meaningfully to the country’s economic diversification,” Ediomu adds.

He charges members of the Planning Committee to work diligently towards developing a clear framework that will support the effective delivery of the Minister’s objectives and strengthen the Ministry’s role in driving innovation-led growth.

Also speaking, Umaru Abu, Team Lead at FCDO-PACE and facilitator of the committee, congratulates members and underscores the urgency of their assignment. He urges them to act swiftly to translate the Ministry’s aspirations into concrete outcomes through innovative restructuring and clearly defined pathways for socio-economic development.

“The committee will critically examine actionable strategies that will enable the Ministry to align more constructively and structurally with the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Abu says.
