The Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (FMIST) says it is partnering with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to develop clean cooking technology in underserved areas across Nigeria.

According to the Minister, the discussions centred on opportunities that will ensure the partnership’s success, including aligning Nigeria’s regulatory framework to promote local manufacturing, sustainable financing models to foster market growth, and clean cooking technologies ranging from improved cookstoves to biogas and solar cookers.
Uche Nnaji, Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, disclosed this after a strategic meeting with the UNDP Nigeria delegation, led by Resident Representative Elsie Attafuah.
The Minister described the meeting as a collaborative effort “to discuss how we can leverage technology innovation, sustainable financing, and supportive regulatory policies to expand clean cooking access, especially in underserved communities.”
The goal, the Minister says, is to reduce reliance on traditional biomass fuel, improve public health and promote cleaner energy sources within Nigeria.
Additionally, the proposal to establish a Joint Technical Working Group as one of the key outcomes of the meeting, according to Nnaji, who explained that the group would lead collaborative efforts in high-priority states and work to establish financing mechanisms to support the clean cooking goals.
“This collaborative framework will advance clean cooking initiatives across Nigeria, with technological innovation at the core of our efforts and increase awareness to drive adoption,” the Minister said.
According to Nnaji, the Ministry’s goals and visions are strengthened through partnerships like the one with UNDP. “With UNDP Nigeria expertise, we will foster innovations that not only enhance public health but also contribute to environmental sustainability,” he said, adding that the collaboration with the UNDP would help create a pathway for Nigeria’s transition to clean energy, which aligns with the country’s national and global climate goals.
