South Africa’s MTN Group today announced that Mazen Mroue, its Group Chief Technology and Information Officer, and a former MTN Nigeria COO, will assume an additional role as CEO of Digital Infrastructure (Infraco) starting January 1, 2025.

The appointment of Mroue is part of the telecoms group’s leadership changes announced today to drive growth and support the MTN Ambition 2025 strategy.

According to the group, which owns MTN Nigeria, the nation’s largest mobile network operator in Nigeria, the changes are focused on “addressing succession, operational execution, and advancing the Ambition 2025 strategy” across its markets in Africa.

In addition, MTN says Mazen Mroue, its Group Chief Technology and Information Officer, will assume an additional role as CEO of Digital Infrastructure (Infraco) starting January 1, 2025. In this position, Mroue will oversee Bayobab, MTN’s fibre and mobility business, and lead its data centre strategy. Mroue, who joined MTN in 1998, has held several leadership roles across the company’s operations in Africa and the Middle East.

Mitwa Ng’ambi, who has been CEO of MTN Cameroon since 2022, will take over as CEO of MTN Côte d’Ivoire on March 1, 2025. She will replace Djibril Ouattara, who is retiring early after a long career with the Group, including leadership roles at MTN Congo-Brazzaville. MTN says Ouattara will work with Ng’ambi for a few months to ensure a seamless transition.

Ng’ambi brings over 15 years of telecoms experience to the role. In a statement, MTN highlights her track record of driving growth and innovation, including her leadership at MTN Cameroon, where she chaired the board of Mobile Money Corporation, the company’s fintech arm in Cameroon. Previously, she led MTN Rwanda, securing key operating licenses and overseeing the company’s listing on the Rwanda Stock Exchange

Another leadership change is Wanda Matandela, MTN South Africa’s Chief Commercial Operations Officer, who will step into Ng’ambi’s role as CEO of MTN Cameroon, also effective March 1, 2025. MTN describes Matandela as a seasoned leader with over 20 years of experience in telecoms, financial services, and consumer goods.

Mroue, who joined MTN in 1998, has held several leadership roles across the company’s operations in Africa and the Middle East.

Before becoming MTN Group Chief Technology and Information Officer (GCTIO), Mroue held the position of the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of MTN Nigeria.

Since joining MTN in 1998, Mazen has held various senior positions within the Group’s regional operations in Africa and Middle East including roles as CEO, COO and CIO of various operating companies.

Mazen holds a Master’s degree in Engineering, Intellectual Systems and Networks. He is also certified in Leadership Development and Executive Finance from Harvard Business School and INSEAD respectively.

Among the updates, Frédéric Schepens, CEO of Bayobab, MTN’s digital infrastructure business, has left the company effective immediately. In its statement, MTN thanked Schepens for his contributions and wished him success in his future endeavors.

MTN Group CEO Ralph Mupita says these leadership changes reflect the company’s “internal succession bench-strength.”
