Frehiwot Tamru, Ethio Telecom CEO, on how the Ethiopian telecoms operator’s Telebirr gained 37 million mobile money users in two years.

“It was very difficult,” the Ethio Telecom CEO tells attendees at MWC Kigali held in Rwanda, “for regulators, policy makers to understand what it can be and the risks associated with going digital. It took two years to convince policy makers and regulators to get the licence. But to reach 37 million subscribers, it only took two years. And that is the power of mobile technology.
