Galaxy Backbone, NigComSat Forge Alliance to Deliver Internet in 774 LGA’s

Galaxy Backbone and NigComSat, two government tech agencies, said that they have joined forces to roll out fibre and satellite connectivity that will deliver internet services across 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Nigeria.

Galaxy Backbone (GBB), a public enterprise of the Federal Government of Nigeria, said it will be providing optical fibre connectivity to 774 LGA Secretariats across 30 states in Nigeria, as part of the upcoming Project 774 LG Connectivity.

GBB, which has partnered with sister agency Nigcomsat, the satellite service provider, to provide internet access to all LGAs in Nigeria.

Galaxy Backbone and Nigcomsat underscored that their partnership will help to ensure that internet services work effectively in all the secretariats. Nigcomsat has made a commitment to prioritise the provision of efficient connectivity services through its satellite services. GBB will ensure that all 744 LGAs have access to fibre optic cable. 

The initiative is in line with the Federal Government’s efforts through the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, and is being carried out under the supervision of Dr Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy.

“The implementation of this project is expected to drive transformation and unlock opportunities that will deliver sustainable development for all, through the power of connectivity,” the Nigerian Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, said about the project aims to strengthen the local government and create new opportunities.

Galaxy Backbone and Nigcomsat underscored that their partnership will help to ensure that internet services work effectively in all the secretariats. Nigcomsat has made a commitment to prioritise the provision of efficient connectivity services through its satellite services. GBB will ensure that all 744 LGAs have access to fibre optic cable. 

Galaxy Backbone said that it “will provide digital infrastructure services to enhance connectivity and enable digital transformation across various sectors of the country.”

According to the government technology agency, “all the Local government authorities will be able to enhance the lives of their people through the provision of access to modern information and services, empower local businesses to do more with their business, foster digital skills and promote all levels of inclusiveness.”

Furthermore, Isime Esene, the media communications aide to the Minister said that “Project 774 LG Connectivity will create, at least, 300 direct jobs, as we deploy nationwide and potentially more jobs indirectly from the increase in digital access, aligns with our ministry’s strategic blueprint and it is a significant step toward achieving the present administration’s mandate to deliver efficient public service to citizens at the local government level”

Additionally, “through strategic partnerships and the deployment of cutting-edge technology, the project will provide resources and promote transparency in service delivery, stimulate economic growth, and improve citizen engagement. The project is expected to drive transformation and unlock opportunities that will deliver sustainable development to all through the power of connectivity.”

 Galaxy Backbone said that it recognizes the crucial role played by local government administrations in delivering government services and driving economic progress and development across the nation.
