Globacom Nigeria has been honoured with the awards of the Best Telecoms Company of the Year, Most Innovative Mobile Player of the Year and Undersea Cable Company of the Year at the 2014 Beacon of ICT Awards held recently in Lagos.
The awards were given based on the result of an online poll conducted from December 2013 to March 30, 2014, by the organiser, Communications Week, in which over 250,000 respondents participated.
According to Communications Week, Glo was voted the Best Telecoms Company of the Year because of its revolutionary products and crashing telecom service tariffs. The company also got the Most Innovative Mobile Player award, because of its innovative voice and data services in the industry.
It was voted the Undersea Cable Company of the Year as a result of the emergence of Glo 1 as a major bandwidth provider in the West Africa sub-region, providing services to companies in different sectors including telecoms, oil and gas, construction, banking and manufacturing, according to the awards organisers.
Other winners at the event included First Bank of Nigeria Plc, Vodacom Business, Dataflex, DHL Unified Payments, Phase 3 Telecoms and Interconnect Clearing House.
Ken Nwogbo, CEO of Communications Week said that the Beacon of ICT Awards is a platform that rewards the vision and enterprise of individuals and companies that have contributed to the growth of the ICT industry.
The event was attended by Ernest Ndukwe, former Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Uche Orji, Managing Director of Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, Gbenga Adebayo, President of Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Lanre Ajayi, President of Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria; Head of Media and Publicity of Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Tony Ojobo, who represented the Executive Vice Chairman, Eugene Juwah and Chris Uwaje, former President of Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON).
