Globacom Limited, Nigeria’s second national operator (SNO), may have halted plans to bring in Ahmad Farroukh to lead its mobile business unit, after failing to reach an agreement with the former MTN Nigeria CEO, Technology Times has learnt.
Several media reports claimed that the SNO has concluded talks with Farroukh to head Glo Mobile, the fully-owned mobile business unit of Globacom, as the telecoms conglomerate launches an aggressive plan to reposition the business for the growing competition in the Nigerian telecoms market by hiring new talents, upgrading its network and enhancing the efficiency of its customer service delivery.
However, people conversant with developments at Globacom, who spoke with Technology Times on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak on the matter, say that both parties have failed to reach an agreement during talks between the top leadership of the telecoms conglomerate, and the former MTN Nigeria CEO.
Ahmad Farroukh: I have been hired by Globacom
“Farroukh will not be joining Globacom,” according to the source, who hints that reports published in some media outlets that the former MTN Nigeria CEO would be joining the telecoms group did not emanate from the business or its top leadership.
Meanwhile, speaking in a phone interview with Technology Times on Tuesday, the former MTN Nigeria CEO, who claims that he has been hired by Globacom, describes as “rubbish” news published by media outlets about his negotiations with the telecoms group.
“I have been hired by Globacom,” Farroukh says, describing as “rubbish” and “a lot of nonsense” news circulating about his talks with the telecoms group.
Farroukh further tells Technology Times to steer clear of any publication on the matter threatening to file a lawsuit if we report that talks between the two parties have broken down.
“I have been hired by Globacom,” Farroukh tells Technology Times, warning that we are not authorised to publish the story.
“This is all rubbish, and if you publish this story, I will sue you,” Farroukh tells Technology Times.
When reminded by Technology Times that the media group has acted professionally by making all efforts to contact him to get his side of the story, and grant him the right to state his side, Farroukh says that, “You are not authorised to publish this story. Do not tarnish my relationship with Globacom.”
Meanwhile people conversant with the situation at the SNO, who spoke with Technology Times on Tuesday under strict condition of anonymity confirmed that Farroukh was in negotiations with the top leadership of the telecoms group, Globacom.
According to another source, “the talks between Farroukh and Globacom actually happened, but it was never concluded. It’s not a done deal.”
