Explaining why it gave the Fastest Growing Telecommunications Award to Glo Mobile Ghana, Akin Napthal, Publisher of Mobile World said that the judges cited the record by Ghana’s telecoms regulatory agency, the National Communications Authority, which credited the network with acquiring one million subscribers within 90 days of operation.

Glo Mobile Ghana also swept some 2.47 million subscribers within 14 months, a feat described as unprecedented in the local market where the Nigerian mobile phone company had successfully reserved 1.7 million numbers for subscription ahead of commercial roll-out.

Organisers of GTA adds that the feat achieved by Glo was even more profound because the company reached the height in spite of the new SIM Card registration regulation that disallows instant subscription by customers.

According to the organisers,  the ‘Glo Biiiig 5’ promo, an innovative tariff plan  which gives Glo customers instantly  five times usage credit for the value of every respective recharge made, earned the company the second award.

The Glo Biiiig 5 is a package that automatically credits for instance a subscriber who loads GHC1 credit (about N100) with GHC 5 (about N500) worth of credit. With the additional credit, the customer can call any network in Ghana, send SMS and browse the internet. Customers can also enjoy extra browsing time online with bonus credit earned on Biiiiig 5.

Receiving the award, Dhirendra Surve, Head of Marketing at Glo Mobile Ghana, expressed appreciation for the honour and described it as a fitting  recognition for the untiring efforts of the company  to deliver optimum network experience and satisfaction to its customers.

“Since the essence of recognitions like this is to encourage us to achieve more, we at Glo assure you that we will work even harder to exceed the expectations of our cherished customers and the general public”, Dhirendra adds.

Glo entered the Ghanaina telecoms market as the sixth operator and began commercial business on April 29th 2012 at a time when market watchers and all the experts considered Ghana’s telecoms sector as being too saturated and without any room for a new entrant player.

The company took its chances, and with determination and customer-centric offerings, has succeeded in claiming an enviable size of the market for itself, according to a press statement by Globacom.
