Dr Mike Adenuga, Chairman of Globacom has said his commitment to put Nigeria telecoms sector on the global map is driven by his “sense of responsibility.”
The business mogul and owner of the Second National Operator (SNO) said this at the African Information and Communications Technology Awards (AFRICTA) where he was named the African ICT Man of the Decade.
“Dr Adenuga was driven by a sense of responsibility to improve the quality of life for Africans and to bring latest technology to the soil of the continent , as obtained in the developed world” said Adenuga, represented by Bisi Koleosho Head of Business Operations, in a speech to attendees at the event after receiving the award.
Organisers of the awards described Dr. Adenuga as a pan-Africanist who has put a human face to wealth creation and an investor whose vision for the ICT industry is founded “on a tradition of changing the life of the black man”
Globacom received four awards including the Broadband Backbone Provider of the year for its Glo 1 infrastructure, Subscriber – Friendly
Telecoms Operator of the Year for its commitment to subscriber rewards and sponsorships , Fastest Growing Mobile Operator of the Decade and Best Wholesale Broadband Company of the year.
Market Information by the Nigeria Communications Commission reveals that over 130 million mobile lines are active at the end of August 2014 with Globacom having 27.4 million subscribers representing 21% market share.
As the Broadband backbone provider of the year, Glo 1 was cited as bringing to West Africa a more flexible and efficient work environment with guaranteed connectivity anywhere, anytime as had never been experienced before.
According to AFRICTA the telecoms giant was singled out for further praise for its promotion of the entertainment industry, sports and sponsorship ofcultural festivals across the Nigerian ethnic terrain, hence rated the most Subscriber friendly Operator.
“ It is beyond any doubt that Globacom may have spent more than any other network in the African continent to support the customer on its network and it is fast becoming a subject of study on how a business can remain and profitable while caring so much for customers,” AFRICTA said.
In giving the Fastest Growing Mobile Operator of the Decade Award to Globacom, the judges of AFRICTA said that Globacom after roll out in 2003 “grew in geometric progression, setting records that are still difficult to equal”.
AFRICTA is one of Nigeria’s telecoms industry awards organised by Nigeria’s IT and Telecoms Digest as an integral part of the
annual West African Information Communications Technology (WAFICIT) Conference.
