Google is gearing up to introduce a new tool called “Lookup” to aid users in identifying unknown callers, potentially revolutionising phone call safety and security for Google Pixel users.

This feature, currently in beta testing, aims to address the common dilemma of receiving calls from unfamiliar numbers, according to the technology company.

When a Pixel user receives a call from an unknown number, they can navigate to the Recent Calls tab and tap on the respective entry to access a drop-down menu. Here, they’ll find the option to use the Lookup feature, enabling them to conduct online searches on the number using various installed apps, including Google Search.

While Lookup holds promise in furnishing valuable insights about incoming calls, it is crucial to acknowledge its reliance on web searches, which may not always yield comprehensive results. Consequently, it may not entirely supplant dedicated caller ID applications like Truecaller. Nonetheless, it stands as a valuable tool in the arsenal against potential scams or bothersome callers.

In an era where scammers employ increasingly sophisticated tactics, such as AI-generated voices or spoofing legitimate business numbers, maintaining vigilance and verifying suspicious calls through trusted means remains paramount.

The anticipated availability of the Lookup feature for Pixel users outside Japan remains uncertain. However, given its current beta testing phase, there is a possibility of its inclusion in the forthcoming Pixel Feature Drop update, slated for June.

In the interim, users can explore other forthcoming features in Android 15 and keep abreast of developments surrounding new Google Pixel devices, including the Google Pixel Fold 2, Google Pixel 8a, Google Pixel 9, and Google Pixel 9 Pro.
