Nigeria, home to one of the largest phone users in Africa, has been named as one of the first markets where Gionee ELife S5.1, holder of the Guinness World Records for the thinnest smartphone will launch this month.

According to the phone makers, the new smartphone will be launched in Nigeria this month as well as India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Myanmar and others will follow.

“Today, Gionee sells over 25 million handsets per year worldwide and ranks No.10 in the world by smartphone market share”, the phone maker said.

At launch, the smartphone will come packed with a travel charger, USB cable, OTG cable, hands free, protective cover, protective TP film, user guide, and a warranty card in a rather thin box, the company said.

Gionee, makers of the smartphone announced that the previous record-holder for the thinnest smartphone, broke its own record and announced the latest model, the Gionee ELife S5.1 International version with 5.1mm thickness.

The company said that the ultra thin deign has earned Gionee ELife S5.1 its own Guiness World Records title as the thinnest smartphone in the world.

Curved at the edges for a fresh new look, the handset is supposed to offer improved in-hand feeling. With the imbedded camera that looks like a natural fit, slimmer bezels, the loss of weight and the slimmer body, the Gionee Elife S5.1 is already looking elegant in the only area where its predecessor was open to criticism, the smartphone maker claimed.

The Elife S5.1 is built with durable magnesium alloy metal rim; both the back and front have Gorilla Glass protection against scratches; ultimately creating a combination of hardness and softness to bring maximum protection to the device, so it doesn’t bend in your jeans pocket. The design is clean and simple, no extra lines like iPhone 6 or unnecessary decoration in the back cover.

According to Gionee’s Head of Design, mobile device ergonomics is an important part of considerations when designing a device. The curved edge design of Elife S5.1 ensures the phone fits and feels comfortable in the holders’ hands. The metallic structure and durable glass will also ensure firmer gripping to avoid accidental drops.

“Gionee designs smartphones as trendy and fashionable accessories rather than a communication device. Indeed, thin devices are in demand. However, we are not focusing solely on creating the thinnest products. Our focus is always on creating a different product with its own character which inspires joy in your daily life”, the company said in a statement.

“In terms of the operating software, Gionee really did some creative improvements that consumers will be fond of, like a “pocket mode” to avoid of mis-touch, gestures control, real time camera effects and many other updated thoughtful features”, Gionee said.
