IBM says it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire HRL Laboratories, a leading US research and development institution, in a strategic move that is expected to accelerate the technology giant’s quantum computing ambitions, strengthen its enterprise offerings and reinforce its position in the global race to commercialise next-generation computing.
The agreement, announced by the tech giant, expands IBM’s quantum research capabilities by bringing HRL’s expertise in silicon-spin qubit engineering, quantum sensing and advanced materials into the company’s growing quantum computing programme.
For IBM, the acquisition is more than an expansion of its research portfolio. It represents a long-term investment in technologies that could underpin future commercial quantum computing services for enterprises, governments and research organisations seeking computing power beyond the limits of today’s classical computers.

The acquisition gives IBM access to HRL’s specialised work on silicon-spin qubits, an emerging quantum computing architecture that complements IBM’s established leadership in superconducting quantum processors.
Unlike IBM’s current superconducting qubit technology, silicon-spin qubits can potentially be manufactured using fabrication techniques similar to those already employed by the global semiconductor industry.
This compatibility with conventional chip manufacturing processes could ultimately make future quantum computers easier to scale, more compact and potentially less expensive to produce.
By combining expertise across both architectures, IBM believes it can accelerate research while maintaining flexibility in designing future generations of quantum processors.
