The upcoming Ibom Tech Week 2024 which merges tech and culture will promote Akwa Ibom State as one of Nigeria’s rising tech hubs, according to organisers of the event.
Ibom Tech Week 2024, which is scheduled to hold October 28 to November 2 in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital will also focus on capacity building, Innovation & technology development, and entrepreneurship.
The programme, its organisers say, was started in 2011 by Hanson Johnson, now president of Ibom Innovation. In 2023, it attracted over 4,000 participants, 50-plus speakers, 15 exhibitors, 100 sponsors and partners, establishing Akwa Ibom as a new tech destination in Nigeria. It has also been instrumental in connecting citizens of the state to job opportunities.
The initiative seeks to revolutionise tech through its programmes: Made in Akwa Ibom, a digital platform dedicated to celebrating local creations; Ibom Languages Project, where teams propose innovative ideas to build a functional working model that relates to Ibom languages and culture; ProjectCREATE, a digital talent initiative that equips young people with business skills; and TechUp, which connects tech industry experts to showcase the latest technological innovations and discuss trends. These initiatives, along with others, make up Akwa Ibom Tech Week.
Amanda Etuk, Chairman of the Planning Committee, says that the event will also feature a hackathon on the theme ‘Building a Resilient Innovation Ecosystem.’
“It seeks to harness the ingenuity of tech enthusiasts, developers and innovators to develop digital solutions to pressing challenges facing Akwa Ibom state across various sectors of the economy,” Etuk says.
At the event, “we build talent, connect people to jobs, and spur innovation. For Africa to solve its problems, solution providers must come from within. The Ibom Innovation through Akwa Ibom Tech Week, is spearheading this,” according to a statement by its organisers.
The programme will showcase and address the innovation challenges that the country faces while also allowing corporate sponsorship to support innovation and provide multiple solutions for the challenges.
The Tech Week programme promises to further place Akwa Ibom as a key player in Nigeria’s digital transformation, driving innovation and connecting talents with opportunities.
The event is backed by major partners such as LAskill, The Bunker, Netisens, Sheedx Africa, Start Innovation Hub, rootHub, and others, along with Sponsorship from Google, AI In Nigeria and ALAT by Wema, according to the organisers.
