The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is set to host an outreach event in Lagos to promote the adoption of new top-level domains (gTLDs) among Nigerian organisations.
The event scheduled for November 4, at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Victoria Island, offers an “invaluable opportunity for Nigeria’s commercial and non-commercial entities, including financial institutions, technology startups, and community organisations, to learn how they can establish a unique digital identity by acquiring a top-level domain (TLD),” according to the domain name body.

ICANN, a nonprofit established in 1998 to coordinate the internet’s domain name system (DNS), stated that the event will introduce participants to its New gTLD Next Round Programme, which seeks to increase global diversity in digital identities.
An important highlight of the event will be the introduction of ICANN’s Applicant Support Programme (ASP). Through ASP, ICANN offers eligible applicants up to $200,000 in rebates to offset the costs of acquiring a new TLD. This financial support, ICANN says, is geared towards reducing barriers for eligible applicants.
By acquiring a gTLD, ICANN says that Nigerian organisations can “enhance their global digital footprint, foster local innovation, and promote greater diversity in the digital space.” For non-commercial entities, gTLDs offer a platform to establish a credible online presence and connect with a wider audience.
The event also offers a chance for face-to-face networking. Attendees—including executives, ICT managers, and digital strategists from sectors like banking, telecoms, and community organisations—will have direct access to ICANN officials and other participants to discuss best practices and outreach strategies.
ICANN has previously hosted similar events worldwide, as part of its efforts in supporting digital inclusivity and innovation. Since its inception in 1998, the California-based organisation has maintained the internet’s structure to ensure it operates as a single, global network. Through programnes like the New gTLD, ICANN is opening the door for local communities to expand their digital footprint globally, according to the body.
Registration is available on ICANN’s website for both in-person and virtual attendance.
