Over 1.4 billion units of smartphones were shipped by vendors in 2015, marking the highest year of shipments on record and up 10.1% from over 1.3 billion units shipped in 2014.
This is extracted from preliminary data from the International Data Corporation’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, which shows the growth in smartphone shipment last year when Samsung retained the market leader.
It also reveals that smartphone manufacturers shipped a total of 399. 5 million units during the fourth quarter of 2015, resulting in 5.7% growth when compared to the 377.8 million units shipped in the last quarter of 2014.
Samsung remained the leader in the worldwide smartphone market for the year with 324.8 million shipments, which is up 2.1% from the 318. 2 million shipments in 2014.
IDC maintained that the continued demand for Apple’s iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, particularly in China and the US, elevated Apple in 2015 to 231.5 million units shipped in the year. This represents 20. 2% growth from the 192. 7 million units shipped in 2014.
Huawei, Lenovo and Xiaomi came third, fourth and fifth respectively in the competitive worldwide smartphone market share.
