Rodger Werkhoven, Independent Creative Director at OpenAI, will be discussing the transformative potential of agentic artificial intelligence (AI) at the InnovateAI Conference Lagos 2025 holding today at the Landmark Centre in Lagos.

OpenAI’s Werkhoven gave an insight into the world of agentic AI during a press conference held on Thursday in Ikoyi, Lagos by AI in Nigeria, organisers of the InnovateAI Conference Lagos 2025 .

Werkhoven, who will be joining an impressive lineup of speakers at the annual AI event, emphasises that the evolution from helper AI to agentic AI marks a significant shift in how individuals interact with technology, particularly in the realm of personal and business productivity.

How does agentic AI work?

Werkhoven explains that earlier iterations of AI primarily served as assistants, capable of performing tasks such as writing content or generating images. However, the latest advancements in agentic AI allow these systems to operate applications and interfaces autonomously. This means that users can now delegate complex tasks—such as planning a business trip—entirely to AI systems.

“Agentic AI can now take over the entire process of organising a trip,” Werkhoven states. “Users simply need to specify their destination and requirements, and the AI will handle everything from booking flights to securing hotel accommodations.” This capability, he adds, represents a major leap forward in making technology more user-friendly and efficient.

One of the standout features of agentic AI is its ability to learn and adapt to individual user preferences. For instance, if a user follows a vegan diet, the AI will consider this when making travel arrangements, ensuring that all options align with their dietary restrictions. This level of personalisation is expected to enhance user satisfaction and streamline decision-making processes, according to the OpenAI’s Independent Creative Director.

Werkhoven notes that this shift toward personalised systems is driving competition among tech companies as they strive to develop more sophisticated agentic AI models. “The first models are being launched now, and while they are not perfect yet, they represent a significant advancement,” he explains. He compares this evolution to the early days of television, which began with black-and-white screens before progressing to 3D virtual reality experiences.

Werkhoven highlights a product called Swarm, which consists of multiple smaller agents designed for specific tasks—such as booking flights or hotels. By connecting these agents into a cohesive unit, users can effectively manage various aspects of their personal or business needs.

“There is so much opportunity for young people,” he stated. “I envision a scenario where the first billion-dollar company run by a single person in Nigeria could be led by one of your youngest CEOs.” Unlike previous generations who relied on hiring colleagues and building teams, today’s youth have the tools at their disposal to create businesses independently through Swarm AI, the OpenAi’s Independent Creative Director says.

“This approach allows individuals to build a complete company using agentic AI,” he explains. “Entrepreneurs can leverage these tools to operate efficiently without needing a large team.” This is particularly empowering for young entrepreneurs who may lack traditional resources but possess innovative ideas.

Werkhoven expresses optimism about the potential for young people in Nigeria to harness agentic AI for entrepreneurial ventures. He believes that the next generation of successful entrepreneurs will emerge from this environment where one individual can create a billion-dollar company using advanced technology.
