The Internet Society Nigeria Chapter (ISOC Nigeria) plans to deploy community Wi-Fi in tertiary institutions in Kogi State to bridge the digital divide and improve access to online resources.
Engineer Kunle Olorundare, President, Internet Society Nigeria Chapter (ISOC Nigeria), who discloses the planned Wi-Fi deployments during a meeting with Dr Helen Adeniyi, Kogi State Commissioner of Innovation, Science and Technology, says the body is committed to bridging the gap that exists in the Nigerian digital space.
He notes that in Kogi State, and just like across Nigeria, many do not have sufficient training in the area of technology. ISOC Nigeria seeks to intervene by improving technical skills and providing internet access to support this effort, Olorundare says.
The ISOC Nigeria ‘Wi-Fi intervention project,’ is an initiative by the body to provide free Wi-Fi access to educational institutions, according to its President. The project seeks to support the students and staff of these institutions by enhancing their access to online resources and promoting digital learning.
Kogi State, the ISOC Nigeria President says, will be the first to benefit from this significant intervention planned to boost internet access in rural schools and those with inadequate resources. The development is expected to create an avenue for similar projects in other regions, IGF says.
“The project will target tertiary institutions in need of improved internet services, which will enhance the quality of education and research activities in these schools,” according to Olorundare.
He further imlpores the Kogi State Commissioner to conduct an assessment across tertiary institutions in the state to determine their needs and the number of students and staff in these institutions.
In response, the Commissioner expressed her willingness to carry out the request, acknowledging the importance of these needs. According to the report from the meeting, she will work closely with ISOC Nigeria, and “the assessment will prioritise schools that currently lack reliable internet services or have inadequate digital infrastructure.”
ISOC Nigeria says it committed to promoting internet accessibility, digital governance and cybersecurity across the country. Its new partnership with the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology in Kogi State would help promote a high level of cyber literacy within the state, and extend it to other parts of the country, according to the body.
