The Lagos State Drivers Institute (LASDRI) says it has officially adopted computer-based testing (CBT) for its drivers’ recertification process as part of plans to reduce fatalities caused by road accidents by 70 per cent.
This initiative was revealed by Mrs. Tiamiyu Afusat, General Manager of LASDRI, during an interview on the Radio Lagos Magazine Programme Awaye on Wednesday, August 14, 2024.
The introduction of the CBT, the LASDRI GM says, is a strategic move aimed at enhancing the overall standards of driving within the state. Through this testing method, drivers will be assessed on their knowledge of road usage and safety protocols before being allowed to operate vehicles.
The primary goal is to curb reckless driving behaviors and eliminate negative practices on Lagos roads, Mrs Tiamiyu says while explaining that the CBT initiative aligns with global standards for driver training and addresses the pressing issue of road traffic accidents caused by human error.
Additionally, the implementation of CBT will complement existing efforts to elevate the professionalism of drivers, ultimately producing a more competent and safety-conscious workforce.
According to the agency, in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Development Agenda, LASDRI is committed to implementing policies that will minimise road accidents in Lagos. Proper training for drivers, she adds, is a crucial step towards reducing fatalities on the roads by more than 70%.
Mrs Tiamiyu urges all LASDRI Training Centers and annexes across the state to swiftly adhere to the new CBT requirements. Compliance is essential for the success of this life-saving programme, which aims to enhance the safety awareness and skills of professional drivers in Lagos, she says.
LASDRI was established by Law No. 13, as published in the Lagos State Official Gazette in July 2007. The institute was created to address the issue of untrained drivers on the roads, which has resulted in a high number of road traffic accidents, wasted man-hours, and increased pressure on health facilities. Recognizing the importance of ensuring that professional drivers are properly trained and certified, the Lagos State Government has made it mandatory for all professional drivers to undergo retraining and recertification at LASDRI.
