The Lagos State Government says it has an ambitious goal of equipping one million youths by the year 2030 with Artificial Intelligence (AI) Digital Training Skills.
The AI Digital Training initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Tertiary Education, aims to provide students of state tertiary institutions with the necessary digital skills to enhance their opportunities and capabilities in today’s competitive world, according to the Lagos State Government.
Tolani Sule, Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, said that the programme “is aimed at equipping over one million young people in the state with the requisite digital skills by 2030 to make them more employable, expanding the horizon of their opportunities and capabilities.”

This initiative marks the second phase of the AI Digital Training programme for students of state tertiary institutions. According to the Commissioner, the programme tagged “Maximising the Transforming Capabilities of Artificial Intelligence in the 21st Century Workplace,” will feature training in entrepreneurial skills development alongside core digital skills training using technology and tools in critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving.
The AI skills programme, Sule said, will move away from traditional rote-based learning, which often leaves graduates struggling to translate their knowledge into practical skills that are sought after in today’s job market.
The three-week programme is set to begin on 26th October 2024 and will run until 12th November 2024. It will feature industry experts from various sectors, including prominent figures in the economy.
Participating institutions include the Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Lagos State College of Health Technology (LASCOHET), and Lagos State College of Nursing (LASCON). The programme aims to set a high standard in terms of digital skills capabilities and improve employment opportunities for recent graduates, according to Lagos State.
In February 2024, the Lagos State Government hosted a Stakeholders forum in Lagos focused on innovative teaching methods for the 21st century. During the forum, educators were enlightened on the potential impact of integrating AI tools in Nigerian schools. This integration has the power to transform the education landscape by offering creative solutions to current challenges, enhancing the quality and accessibility of education, and streamlining administrative tasks for teachers and academic institutions, the Lagos State Government said.. This will allow educators to spend less time grading exams, assessing homework, and providing feedback to students.
