The Lagos State Government says it is advancing efforts to integrate technology into classroom teaching, with a new training programme focused on digital pedagogy and artificial intelligence (AI) for secondary school teachers.
The initiative, organised by the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), brought together selected teachers from across the state’s six education districts, alongside participants from the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board, for a three-day workshop aimed at improving teaching outcomes through technology-driven methods.
The workshop, themed “Digital Pedagogy and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Teachers on GLs 15–17,” reflects the state’s ongoing push to equip educators with skills required for a technology-driven learning environment, where digital literacy and AI adoption are becoming increasingly central, TESCOM says.
The training aligns with the Lagos State Government’s broader digital transformation agenda under the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus development framework of Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, which identifies education and technology as key pillars for economic and social development.
Speaking at the opening session held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry Hall, Tolani Ali-Balogun, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, said the integration of artificial intelligence into teaching has become necessary in response to rapid technological changes.
The Commissioner notes that education systems are evolving alongside advancements in digital technologies, and urged teachers to adopt emerging tools and methodologies to remain effective in the classroom.
Ali-Balogun encourages participants to incorporate digital pedagogy, artificial intelligence and problem-solving approaches into their teaching practices, while staying updated with evolving instructional techniques.
Also speaking, Victoria Peregrino, Chairman of TESCOM, says the programme is designed to strengthen teaching effectiveness by introducing educators to the practical applications of AI in education.
She clarifies that artificial intelligence is intended to support, rather than replace, teachers, noting that the technology can enhance classroom delivery and improve learning outcomes when applied appropriately.
Peregrino adds that the initiative also promotes innovation, critical thinking and ethical considerations in the use of technology within the education system.
According to her, digital pedagogy represents a broader shift beyond the use of tools, requiring a transition from traditional teacher-centred instruction to learner-centred engagement, where students play a more active role in the learning process.
The training programme forms part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government to strengthen capacity within the education sector and align teaching practices with global trends in digital learning and artificial intelligence.
