The Lagos State Government has said its LAG-ID card will help in tracking Lagos residents to enhance public safety and foster development planning in line with its Smart City ambition.
The Lagos Resident card otherwise called LAG-ID, and managed by the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA), was introduced by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The Sanwo-Olu administration said that apart from several other benefits, LAG-ID will assist “in simplifying government’s service delivering and facilitate transactions, by linking existing data sources with a unique person identifier.”
LASRAA: LAG-ID to capture over 20 million residents of Lagos
The Governor said LAG-ID complements his administration’s vision to establish an accurate, reliable and updatable database of all Lagos state residents. This, he said, underscores his administration’s commitment to the attainment of the Smart City vision with the smart card that allows residents to access State services by integrating cutting-edge technology into the daily lives and interaction of citizens with government and public services.
The need to capture the database of over 20 million Lagosians for the purpose of government’s planning and formulation of policies for the people, and also “provide an accurate picture for government’s policy and planning was the brain behind the creation of LASRRA.”
LASRRA, which is on a mission to identify and register all residents of Lagos state for efficient planning and allocation of resources, has upgraded its technology from 1.0 to 2.0 with newer IT infrastructure and introduction of a Smart Multipurpose Card, “which is the end product of 2.0, is to align with global best practices,” Mrs. Adebiyi-Abiola Bilikiss, LASRRA Director-General/CEO said on the agency’s website.
“The new smart card,” LASRRA Director-General/CEO said, “which combines biometric identification with other functionalities and benefits that cut across some vital issues, such as security, financial services, mobility and access to other Government services and amenities, was introduced to ease Government e-services. It will help address the issues surrounding identification and traceability of Lagos residents.” Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) can leverage the initiative through integration and collaboration, she said.
Adebiyi-Abiola sensitised Lagos residents that the status of their registration and LAG-ID card could be known by using the USSD code, 347641#, that has been generated by the agency. “Send this code to the phone number that you used for registration and your status will be stated.”
She explained that no enrolment officer should be given any form of gratification because the registration is free. “For one to qualify to register as a resident, he/she must have spent a minimum of three months in Lagos. So, go and pick up your LAG-ID Card and get it activated for free and start enjoying the benefits that come with it without further hesitation.”
The LAG-ID smart card offers Lagosians the:
i. Verification of identity
ii. Access to wallet services
iii. Provision of value-added financial services
iv. Enabling contactless payments
v. Enhancing information security.
To benefit from this novel initiative, Lagos resident only require to register for free via registration.lagosresidents.gov.ng/register/ after a minimum of three months of residency in the State, then followed by LAG-ID Card pick up which LASRRA said is also activated for free.
