Meta, the parent company of social media giants Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads, plans to introduce a groundbreaking feature empowering Nigerian creators to monetize their content.

Nick Clegg, Meta’s President of Global Affairs, dropped the hint during a meeting today with President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria at the Presidential villa in Abuja, the nation’s seat of power.

In what Meta sees as landmark move set to revolutionise the digital landscape, the eagerly-anticipated feature is scheduled to debut on Instagram and Facebook apps in June 2024, marking a significant stride towards economic empowerment and recognition for Nigerian talents.

“We buried the cable 50 percent deeper than any other subsea cables under the seabed,” the President of Global Affairs at Meta told the Nigerian President. This technological marvel, Clegg said, slated for completion in the first quarter of 2025, promises to be a catalyst for economic growth, potentially yielding a staggering $37 billion increase in economic activity across the African continent within the next few years.

Meta’s undersea cable to launch by Q1 2025

A grateful Clegg attributed the fruition of this innovative venture to President Tinubu’s instrumental role in facilitating an Executive Order crucial to the establishment of Meta-backed deep-sea cable infrastructure in Nigeria.

Detailing the ambitious infrastructure project, Clegg elaborated on its magnitude, boasting capabilities surpassing all existing undersea cables.

In light of these monumental developments, Clegg underscored Meta’s commitment to forging enduring partnerships with Nigeria, emphasising the need for collaboration to deepen mutual benefits.

He also announced Meta’s upcoming feature, poised to empower Nigerian creators by providing them with the means to monetize their content directly through the Instagram app.

“This feature, set to launch in June 2024, will enable Nigerian creators to turn their passion into profit, ushering in a new era of digital entrepreneurship and economic empowerment,” Clegg said underscoring his confidence in the transformative potentials of the initiative.
