MTN Nigeria has apologised to its customers after increasing the price of its 15GB data bundle from N2,000 to N6,000—a 200% increment.

The mobile phone company which admitted the hike was a “mistake,” has asked its subscribers to “forgive and forget.”

Mr Karl Toriola, MTN Nigeria CEO, seen in photo above. MTN Nigeria has apologised to its customers after increasing the price of its 15GB data bundle from N2,000 to N6,000—a 200% increment.

“We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200% increase on your favourite digital bundle,” says MTN Nigeria in a message to its subscribers on Thursday.

“We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200% increase on your favourite digital bundle,” says MTN Nigeria in a message to its subscribers on Thursday.

“We could share several reasons, and provide explanations, but omo, all that one na story. We don cast. We get it and admit it. Let’s just say na mistake.”

The 15GB data plan, which previously cost N2,000, was increased to N6,000, representing a 200% hike. This adjustment came after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a tariff increase of up to 50% for telecoms companies in the country, citing rising operational costs and the need to ensure the industry’s sustainability.

However, the extent of MTN’s price increase has drawn criticism from subscribers and industry observers. Many customers expressed their dissatisfaction on social media platforms, highlighting the financial strain such a hike imposes.

In response to the backlash, MTN appealed to its customers, saying: “In this love season, don’t stay angry with us. Please forgive and forget. You matter die and we will never stop showing you how much. Let’s continue our relationship.”
