MTN Nigeria’s tier 4 data centre being constructed in Lagos, and expected to be “the biggest in West Africa” is scheduled to be completed by December 2024, Karl Toriola, CEO of the nation’s largest mobile company has hinted about the ambitious project.
MTN Nigeria is constructing the state-of-the-art data centre project believed to be sited in Ikeja, the capital of Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos, in partnership with Chinese technology company, Huawei.
“This impressive facility boasts 1,500 racks, the highest-level certification – Tier 4, and a 7-degree transmission, making it capable of delivering exceptional connectivity; expandable, and the largest in West Africa upon completion,” the MTN Nigeria CEO said while writing about his post-inspection experience on the professional social media platform, LinkedIN.
CEO: MTN Nigeria data centre will be achieving the fastest construction of data centre in Africa
The construction of the MTN data centre started August 2023, Toriola said, and when completed the 1500-rack tier 4 data centre will provide a competitive edge to the mobile phone company in Nigeria’s vibrant telecoms market.
“The data centre,” Toriola said, “is designed to enhance our capacity, enabling us to respond swiftly to market demands and support businesses in Nigeria, which aligns with one of the core pillars of our Ambition 2025 strategy to drive industry-leading connectivity operations.”
Toriola, who underscores the economic significance of the facility, says it will play a vital role in supporting the connectivity needs of businesses in the country. “Ultimately, this centre will play a vital role in supporting Nigerian businesses to collaborate through cloud services, expand their capabilities, and thrive.
The MTN Nigeria CEO, who inspected the data centre construction underway “some days ago” alongside the mobile phone company’s CTO, Mohammed Rufai and CFO, Modupe Kadri, also shared a timelapse video of the facility’s buildout.
Providing a progress report, MTN Nigeria says the builders of the data centre took 80 days to complete the building of its foundation, and 100 days to produce 64 prefabricated modular containers during the construction of the data centre.
It also took 20 days to hoist the 64 modules on a two-layer stacked building covering an area of three hundred square metres (300 m2).
According to the mobile phone company, the MTN data centre, with its seven degrees of transmission connectivity, will be “making it the biggest when finished.”
The MTN data centre, the company says, expected to be delivered by December 2024, “will be achieving the fastest construction of data centre in Africa.”
Toriola said that, “our commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles is reflected in the data centre’s eco-friendly design to utilise efficient cooling systems and a combination of traditional energy sources, gas, and renewable energy.”
According to the MTN Nigeria CEO, “we applaud our partners, led by Huawei, for all the incredible work done so far, and their commitment to delivering the entire project at the appointed time.”
