Vice President Kashim Shettima has praised telecommunications giant, MTN Nigeria, for donating ₦1 billion to the Federal Government’s Food Support Programme and 4,600 digital devices to schools.
The donation was announced during a courtesy visit by Ernest Ndukwe, MTN Nigeria Chairman, to the Presidential Villa on Friday.
Shettima describes MTN’s gesture as worthy of emulation and indicative of their commitment to the development of the Nigerian economy.
“I am hugely proud of your (MTN’s) stability as a company and commitment to the progress of our country,” Shettima says, according to a statement released by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to The President on Media & Communications. “We have witnessed a couple of changes in the industry, but you have remained stable and strong.”
The Vice President says that the donation is “worthy of emulation and indicative of its commitment to the development of the Nigerian economy.”
According to Vice President Shettima, the ₦1 billion donation will be managed by the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, and the Office of the National Security Adviser.
The 4,600 digital devices, pre-loaded with U-Learn, will be distributed to secondary schools across the country. The specific schools will be determined in collaboration with MTN.
“It aims to support the most vulnerable, marginalised, and underserved communities, ensuring no one is left behind through increased collaboration and partnership with the Federal Government of Nigeria,” Ndukwe says on the ₦1 billion donation.
The MTN Chairman expressed hope that the devices will support the Federal Government’s objective to increase digital literacy in secondary schools and improve creativity, analytical thinking, adaptability, and students’ access to current information in science and technology.
The mobile phone company says the donation is part of its “AMBITION 2025 strategy,” which focuses on supporting government initiatives.
