MTN Nigeria parent company, MTN Group, has spun off a software business unit as it drives forward its plan to transform from a telecoms company (Telco) into a technology company (TechCo) by 2025.

As part of this transition, MTN is launching a new entity called MTN Software Solutions focused on designing, building, and running high-quality software products, the South Africa telecoms group says.

Marcin Waligora, Executive at MTN Software Solutions, says the new business offshoot has a goal to become “the best software development company across the African continent,” specialising in mobile apps, web apps, AI chatbots, and “generally everything.”

The software business unit aims to deliver cutting-edge software products that enhance the lives of MTN’s over 300 million customers across 18 countries, Waligora says.

In February 2024, MTN says it welcomed 25 talented young individuals to join its software solutions team. These interns, recruited from the non-profit organisation WeThinkCode, bring a diverse range of skills and perspectives to MTN’s software development efforts.

“Their energy, talent, and diversity are not just an addition to our team but an important step in our commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and leading digital solutions for Africa’s progress,” Waligora adds.

Marcin Waligora, the telecoms group says in a statement seen by Technology Times, a seasoned information technology executive with more than 20 years’ experience, joined MTN in March 2023 to lead MTN Software Solutions. Under his guidance, the interns will help MTN accelerate the time to market of software projects, and to improve the customer experience and productivity at the Group.”

MTN says it has been actively developing and expanding its software solutions portfolio. The company has made significant strides in expanding its product offerings, and one notable example is MTN MoMo, a widely-used mobile money service that has played a significant role in promoting financial inclusion and providing access to essential services across the continent.

MTN Business Solutions offers a range of tailored services for enterprises, including cloud services, cybersecurity, and digital marketing tools, aimed at improving efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness, the company says.

Additionally, MTN has developed a variety of mobile apps to enhance the customer experience, such as music streaming platforms, gaming apps, and lifestyle tools. These apps offer entertainment, convenience, and additional value to the services of the telecoms group.
