MTN, Visafone, others top up for ‘generous’ Nigerian Diaspora

MTN Nigeria, the largest moble phone company and Visafone Communications Limited, the biggest CDMA mobile phone company have emerged favourite networks for mobile airtime by Nigerians abroad, an operator poll has shown. The in-house survey by MobileRecharge.com, a mobile top up service company, also shows that Nigerians in the Diaspora are also among the most generous people in the world in repatriating airtime back home to their loved ones. Generosity runs deep among Nigerian expatriates as they clinched the sixth place globally for top 10 most generous nations for airtime benefits to their loved ones back home. Nigerian mobile phone companies MTN Migeria, Airtel, Glo, Etisalat and Visafone also emerged among the top most refilled airtime providers in the world. The findings also show that Hispanic and African expats are more generous than other ethnic groups when it comes to international top ups. “More specifically, sending mobile credit to their native countries using MobileRecharge.com is more popular among Latinos and Africans these days”, the company says. “MobileRecharge.com is not the only company interested in people’s generosity level. The 2013 World Giving Index states the world became a more generous place than the previous year. The average percentage of people donating money, volunteering time and helping strangers all grew, despite a fall in the rate of growth of the global economy. The company says that users regard mobile top ups as an alternative to money transfers or other transfer of goods. “They are instant and easy to send.
