Nigeria’s 5G spectrum auctions advisor, Engr Ubale Maska, has been named among experts to envision the future of the fifth-generation mobile technology for the economies of Africa at the Mobile World Congress (MWC Africa 2022) to hold next week in Rwanda.
MWC Africa, organised by the GSM Association (GSMA), the industry association for players in the mobile value chain is hosting a physical edition of MWC Africa 2022 on October 25-27 at the International Convention Centre in Kigali, Rwanda.
“The 5G summit at MWC Africa will bring together leaders from these stakeholder groups to deliberate the findings of the study, share their visions for the 5G era, and make bold commitments towards the realisation of the 5G potential in Africa,” GSMA says.

In beaming the radar on mobile innovation at the 5G Summit GSMA says that “commercial 5G services are now available in every region of the world, making it a truly global technology. Today, nearly 200 operators in over 80 markets around the world have launched commercial 5G services. In Africa, the journey to 5G has begun but it is still early days for network deployment and commercialisation; currently, commercial 5G networks are available in less than five countries in the region.”

At the 5G Summit where experts will be reviewing the journey to 5G that is gradually gaining momentum across Africa, Maska, who is the Advisor for Nigeria’s spectrum auctions held last year in Abuja and current Executive Commissioner (Technical Services), Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) be joining other session speakers including Kenechi Okeleke, Director Regional, Social & Policy Research, GSMA, who is the moderator, Abdul Kamara, Solutions Engineer, Syniverse; Angela Wamola, Head of GSMA Sub-Saharan Africa, GSMA; Anne-Rachel Inné, Regional Director for Africa, International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and Brelotte Ba, Deputy CEO, Middle East & Africa, Orange.

The African continent’s most influential connectivity event will bring together the very best of thought leadership themes and technology innovations at the flagship mobile industry and technology event to Africa 2022, according to GSMA, which represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide, uniting more than 750 operators with almost 400 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem.

However, GSMA says, “this will change in the coming years as governments and operators in more than 40 countries across Africa anticipate commercial 5G services in their markets by 2025.”
GSMA says it is collaborating with ITU Africa to develop a study to understand the role that 5G will play in Africa’s connectivity landscape and the opportunities that 5G provides for key stakeholders in Africa including governments and regulators, network operators, device and equipment vendors, application developers, consumers and enterprises, among others.
According to GSMA, the 5G Summit is being sponsored by Arm, Rohde & Schwarz, Syniverse and Qualcomm.
