Mr Sunil Taldar, Airtel Africa CEO, has been named as one of the keynote speakers for MWC Kigali 2024 (Mobile World Congress Kigali 2024), alongside a lineup of leaders from business and government.
Organised by the GSMA, MWC Kigali is set to take place from October 29 – 31 in Kigali, Rwanda, brings together leaders from business, government, and the tech industry to discuss and accelerate Africa’s digital transformation. Attendees from over 94 countries are expected to participate, making it one of the continent’s most significant tech gatherings, according to organisers.
Joining Taldar as keynote speakers are influential figures such as Ralph Mupita, CEO of MTN Group; Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU); Kate Kallot, Founder and CEO of Amini; Pelonomi Moiloa, CEO of Lelapa AI; Serigne Dioum, CEO of MTN FinTech; James Zhang, Vice President of Carrier Sales at Huawei; Lee Naik, CEO of TransUnion Africa; and Darren Zhao, President of ZTE for the Middle East and Africa.
According to the organisers, the first keynote, “Africa’s Future First – Pioneering the Path to a Digital Future,” will feature Sunil Taldar of Airtel Africa, Ralph Mupita of MTN Group, Doreen Bogdan-Martin from the ITU, and Mats Granryd, Director General of GSMA. This session will explore how digital technologies are driving socio-economic development and innovation, while addressing the unique challenges faced by the continent, GSMA says.
The second keynote, “The AI Opportunity – Exploring AI Innovation & Impact,” will highlight Africa’s potential to become a global leader in AI-driven growth. This session will feature Kate Kallot, CEO of Amini, and James Zhang of Huawei, alongside Hassanein Hiridjee, Chairman of the Axian Group, and Rwanda’s Minister of ICT and Innovation, Hon. Paula Ingabire. According to the GSMA, the panel will discuss the transformative power of AI, examining how it can boost Africa’s GDP and drive sustainable growth, while addressing key challenges such as infrastructure, data scarcity, and skill development.
In the third keynote titled “Africa’s FinTech Outlook – Visionary Strategies Shaping the FinTech Landscape,” set to hold on day two, leaders such as Serigne Dioum, CEO of MTN FinTech, and the CEOs of Axian Group and TransUnion Africa will share insights on the future of financial technology in Africa. The session will focus on how mobile money, digital payments, blockchain, and AI are transforming Africa’s financial sector, enhancing financial inclusion and driving economic growth across the continent.
The fourth keynote, “Content is King, Queen & Everything in Between,” will explore the future of Africa’s content creation and distribution. Featuring Derrick N. Ashong, Founder and CEO of TMBT and Louis Manu, CEO of Wi-Flix, the discussion will highlight how technological advancements are shaping Africa’s entertainment, media, and content sectors.
MWC Kigali emerged from the GSMA’s M360 Series, a series of events that have taken place across Africa since 2014. These were intended to convene the continental and international technology community to discuss business opportunities in Africa. It is a platform for fostering collaboration, driving innovation,and promoting economic development in Africa.
